Abigail Sefzik
From a young age, Abigail knew she was a writer. When asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she would answer without hesitation: “I am a writer.” As a child, she possessed a natural sense of identity and purpose, one rooted in possibility and imagination. She says that all her work is a tribute to that bright-eyed, freckle-faced girl with a pen in hand and a heart full of dreams.
Throughout her life, writing has been her lens for understanding the world. She believes that words breathe life into our existence, shape history, end and begin wars, and transform everyday living into something meaningful. To her, the role of an artist is to make the ordinary visible—to translate emotion, experience, and culture into a language others can feel and understand. She views writing as a tool for reflection, empowerment, and social change.
Her passion for communication took root during six years of participation in a national speech and debate organization, where she wrote and presented original pieces that earned regional and national titles. At just 19 years old, she founded a nationwide communications business designed to help children express themselves through public speaking, current events, and critical thinking. Her goal was to help young people recognize that their thoughts matter—and their stories deserve to be heard.
This dedication to teaching and mentoring only grew stronger when she became a private English tutor for a student with dyslexia. Through patient and personalized instruction, she helped transform her student from a hesitant writer into a confident storyteller. That experience reminded her of the transformative power of encouragement, empathy, and creativity. She continues this work today by leading writing workshops in retirement homes and palliative care centers, helping individuals preserve their memories and legacies through the written word.
After earning her BA in Media and Communications, she was invited to ghostwrite for a prominent public speaker. Her writing has since appeared in various business journals, newsletters, and digital platforms. In 2022, she published her first book, Crumbs From A Starving Artist, a collection of poetry and essays that uncover beauty in life’s quieter, often overlooked moments.
During her time at university, she was elected Executive Vice President of the student council, where she led multiple initiatives, including a campus-wide Mental Health Initiative launched during the COVID-19 pandemic. She also served on the Diversity and Inclusion committee, where she played a key role in implementing cultural intelligence training for staff and faculty. In her final year, she was accepted into the Lurenchan Leadership program and interned at Cardus Think Tank in Ottawa, where she refined her skills in editing, policy writing, and digital communications, and published an article in one of Cardus’s print magazines.
In 2023, she made a bold career shift to become a mainline flight attendant. This role has enabled her to travel the world, meet people from countless cultures, and work on her second book in cities across the globe. Her experiences on the road have only deepened her commitment to storytelling and her desire to connect people through language. She is currently pursuing her Master’s in English and Education while working on her second book, Scraps From My Table.
She now seeks to build a meaningful career at the intersection of creative writing and communication. Her goal is to work with organizations that champion education, advocacy, and storytelling, while also pursuing freelance writing projects that explore complex social issues through relatable, narrative-driven work. Ultimately, she aspires to teach writing at the university level, mentoring students as they find and cultivate their own unique voices.
She believes that writing is one of the most powerful tools for change, and she is ready to use it. This next step in her academic journey is not just a continuation of her passion but a more profound commitment to using her voice to help others find theirs.
